Blue and Silver Bow Cushion Cover Tutorial

Hello, everyone!

This is kind of a long tutorial for a scatter cushion, but the end result is a beautiful cushion with a completely concealed zipper as opposed to the quick in-seam zipper.

You will need the following:

Fabric for the cushion cover and bow
Matching sewing thread
45 cm zipper

The Cushion Cover

Cut the required length and width of fabric for the cushion cover. I drafted a pattern of 46 cm x 47 cm (18 x 18 1/2 in) cut on the fold with a 1.5 cm (1/2 in) seam allowance included. The completed cushion measures 43 cm x 43 cm (17 x 17 in).

Fold 2 cm (3/4 in) towards the wrong side and lightly iron the fold. This will be the underlap for the zipper. Fold 4 cm (1 1/2 in) towards the wrong side on the opposite end and lightly press the fold. This forms the overlap for the zipper.

Fold 33 cm (13 in) upwards from the overlap section and lightly press the fold. Fold 12 cm (4 3/4 in) downwards from the underlap section as illustrated and lightly press the fold.

The Bow

Cut a strip of fabric to the required width and length. Pin and sew the side seams right sides together. Turn the bow to the right side and lightly press the seams.

Sew two rows of gathering stitches in the center of the bow. Pull the bobbin thread up to gather the center and tie a knot.

The Center Tie

Cut a length of fabric 12 cm by 16 cm (4 3/4 x 6 1/4 in). Pin and sew the right sides of the tie together. Turn the tie to the right side. Neaten the raw edges. Press lightly.

Sew the two ends right sides together and press the seam open. Push the bow through the tie. Handstitch the tie to the right side of the cushion cover, as illustrated. With right sides together, pin and stitch the bow to the side seams of the cover as illustrated.

The Zipper

Place the zipper face down on the overlap as illustrated and pin or tack the zipper tape next to the raw edge. Machine stitch in place.

Pin or tack the other zipper tape to the underlap and machine stitch in place.

Pin and stitch the side seams right sides together. Neaten the raw edges with overlocking or a zigzag stitch if the fabric is inclined to fray.

The end result is a completely concealed zipper with only two side seams.
